Bangladesh mass poisoning

Contamination of water supplies by arsenic in Bangladesh

Allan H Smith, professor of epidemiology at the University of California at Berkeley, USA, et al report that a long-term epidemic of cancers and other fatal diseases is facing Bangladesh because of contamination of water supplies by naturally-occurring arsenic. The catastrophe is on a vast scale and needs to be declared a public health emergency, the article’s authors warn.

Arsenic contamination of ground water has been found in many other countries, including Argentina, Chile, China, India, Mexico, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States, and is a global problem. But Bangladesh’s plight is unprecedented, the article says - between 35 and 77 million people of the country’s total population of 125 million are at risk of exposure to arsenic in their drinking water. At least 100 000 cases of debilitating skin lesions are believed to have already occurred.

From the New York Times: "The central tenet of Mr. Bush's communications operation is on a sign on the office door of Nicolle Devenish, Mr. Bush's campaign communications director, which says: 'It's the Hypocrisy, Stupid,'"
The Latest on Gay Weddings

From the New York Times: "...ceremonies conducted last week in the village of New Paltz by its mayor, Jason West, who last week solemnized marriages for 25 gay couples who did not have licenses.

Mr. West was given a summons on Tuesday at the village hall in New Paltz, charged with 19 criminal counts, fewer than the number of ceremonies he performed on Friday because the police on the scene provided eyewitness accounts of only 19 ceremonies. The charge is a misdemeanor under state law." http://nytimes.com/2004/03/03/nyregion/03CND-GAY.html?hp
Great Dean Meeting

We went to a great Dean meeting tonight. It was organized by the same people as last Friday’s, but we enjoyed it much more. We sat with Joe Neve, who is the Dean volunteer coordinator for Sonoma County. We also talked to a doctor about healthcare reform. We watched the video of his interview with Diane Sawyer.

It was an interesting meeting. We watched the Diane Sawyer interview. I’d be proud to have Dr. Howard Dean as President and Dr. Judy Steinberg Dean as First Lady. I’d be happy to have them as friends. They are real people, not stiff, phony politicians. It is easy to imagine eating cheap Mexican food with them. It is easy to imagine them eating cheap Mexican food, even if there were no journalists to report about it or constituents to meet.

Letter Writing

Last night we each wrote letters to 10 New Hampshire voters asking them to vote for Howard Dean. Here’s how it worked. We signed up at DeanForAmerica. They gave us each 10 names and addresses to write to (they will only give you 10 per 72 hours). There was a sample letter and optional materials to include with the letter. We wrote our own letters, following the example on the website. We wrote them on the computer, then printed them, signed them, addressed the envelopes by hand, and mailed the letters.

No matter where you live, you can help this campaign. For those of you living in Florida, you have the opportunity to really make a difference in the 2004 Presidential Election. Start getting involved now, so we can win in November.

Carol Moseley Braun Endorses Dean for President

I'm very happy that Carol Moseley Braun endorsed Howard Dean. In the debate that I saw, she came across as a thoughtful and reasonable person. Her positions on many issues are very close to mine.

Carol Moseley Braun Endorses Dean for President -
Carroll, Iowa-- Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun endorsed Governor Howard Dean at a rally here today:

"Your support is precious to me, and so I make this recommendation with the most sincerity and thought I have ever brought to any decision," Ambassador Braun said.

Bush's Position on Gay Marriage

"If necessary," he said, "I will support a constitutional amendment which would honor marriage between a man and a woman, codify that, and will — the position of this administration is that whatever legal arrangements people want to make, they're allowed to make, so long as it's embraced by the state, or does start at the state level." - George W. Bush

Oh, well that's clear as mud. How can you codify excluding same sex couples from marrying and respect states' rights? We shouldn't be surprised, Bush usually says he wants things both ways, if it will keep him popular.

Help us get legal protection for our relationship. Here's what the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force recommends:

Why Dean?

This morning, I added a newsfeed from the local Dean campaign. I’ve decided that actively supporting Dean is important. Bo and I plan to attend a local event soon.

Join me in supporting Dean:

Attend a meeting: Dean Events. There is even an event in Mt. Dora, FL.
You can also find meetings through

Donate $100 or whatever you can: Donate to Dean

Tell all your friends. Win
